The Los Angeles Lakers fell 119–109 to the Golden State Warriors in their season opener Tuesday night, with Luka Doncic scoring 43 points, but head coach JJ Redick emphasized the importance of fundamentals and team communication in practice.
Redick said the team focused on transition defense and establishing the basket as the first priority. “We did a poor job of locating the lasers in transition, which was an emphasis point of our game plan,” he said, referencing Golden State’s sharpshooters Buddy Hield and Stephen Curry.
Defensive shifts and closeouts were another point of emphasis. Redick noted, “For the new guys, creating clarity on what our closeouts look like is crucial,” adding that daily drills and repeated teaching are essential to reinforce these habits.
LeBron James, sidelined with sciatica, contributed during practice by asking questions and providing input. “I told him that back-and-forth dialogue is healthy. If you’ve got a question, speak up. If you want to make a point, speak up,” Redick said.
The Lakers coach admitted the team still lacks connectivity on both ends of the floor. “We don’t have that connectivity yet where we all trust and know each other. By the end of last season, our team functioned really well as a unit. We’re not there yet, but we will get there,” he said.
Golden State’s third-quarter surge shifted momentum after halftime, with Jimmy Butler scoring 31 points and making all 16 free throws. Stephen Curry added 23 points, including a key three-pointer in the final minute to secure the win.
Redick praised individual efforts despite the loss. Austin Reaves scored 26 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, while Deandre Ayton added 10 points and six rebounds in his Lakers debut. Marcus Smart contributed nine points with steady defense.
Early-season habits remain a priority, according to Redick. “Until these things become ingrained, they shift on a daily basis. Whether it’s early offense or half-court sets, it’s constantly evolving,” he said, emphasizing the importance of building consistent routines.
The Lakers will host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday, while the Warriors return to Chase Center to face the Denver Nuggets.
