Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr says there’s no urgency to finalize a contract extension, despite the organization’s clear interest in keeping him beyond this season.
Speaking with Tim Kawakami on The TK Show, Kerr discussed why he’s comfortable waiting before making any decisions about his future with the franchise.
“I think Mike [Dunleavy Jr.] respects the fact that I’m just at the point in my career, and we are at the point organizationally, where I just want to make sure everything feels right,” Kerr said, via NBC Sports Bay Area, referring to the Warriors’ general manager. “Not just for me, but for the players, for them.”
Kerr, who has coached Golden State since 2014, acknowledged that every coaching job comes with a natural timeline. “One of the things that I’m aware of is in sports, and every sport, there’s kind of an expiration date on coaching jobs,” he explained. “If you feel as a coach that it’s not clicking anymore, then it’s time to go, and I don’t think that’s the case.”
The 60-year-old emphasized that his relationship with the roster and front office remains strong. “I think I’m very comfortable with the players. I know they respect me. We have a great collaboration. Love working with Mike, love working with this whole organization,” he said.
Kerr added that while an extension is possible, there’s no need to rush into it. “If you had to ask me, I would guess that it’ll keep going,” he said. “But I just don’t really feel like that’s the right call to make right now. Maybe we’re at the All-Star break, and it’s like, ‘Hey, this is going to keep going. Let’s do it.’”
The four-time NBA champion coach remains focused on the present, as the Warriors enter another season anchored by Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler. Kerr’s steady leadership has been central to Golden State’s success, but his approach suggests he values balance and timing over immediate decisions.
“For right now, let’s just kind of see where this all goes,” Kerr said. “I love what I do, and I would imagine I’ll keep doing this.”
