Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves reflected on leadership and team chemistry during his first day of 2025 training camp media availability. “It was fun. We had a good time, competed, got after it,” Reaves said, highlighting the positive energy in early workouts.
Reaves addressed working with LeBron James and Luka Doncic, noting that even if LeBron is not fully on the court, communication is critical. “Just having conversation, dialogue back and forth about what we feel we could do to help our team be successful is going to be key,” he said.
On LeBron’s role off the court, Reaves emphasized observation and vocal leadership. “He’s always going to observe and communicate… being one of our vocal leaders, that’s what he’s done his whole career,” Reaves added.
The guard also reflected on his evolving role as a veteran on the roster. “I was very quiet my first practice. Then the second year, I came out of my shell and talked more,” Reaves said. “Just being able to communicate with the guys what I see and trying to be an extension to the coaching staff… any way I can help that goal come true is what I’ll do.”
Reaves praised the integration of new players, particularly Marcus Smart. “His resume speaks for itself… it’s much better to have him on your team than against him,” he said. Reaves also mentioned working with Deandre Ayton and Doncic, noting the need to continue building chemistry: “Luka passes the ball so well… it looked good, but we’re going to have to continue to build that learning curve.”
The Lakers emphasized fast-paced offense in practice, including hit-ahead passes and early scoring opportunities. Reaves noted, “There was a couple opportunities where the pitch ahead was open… just trying to take advantage of those situations to get early, easy offense. I thought it went well.”
Reaves also joked about an upcoming non-physical team-building exercise planned by coach JJ Redick. “Hopefully it’s golf… maybe pickleball. He’s scared because I’ve never beaten him in a money game of golf,” he said with a laugh.
