During a recent sit-down with Jemele Hill at the American Black Film Festival, NBA veteran Chris Paul opened up about his future in professional basketball.

When asked how much longer he envisions himself playing, Paul offered a candid reflection:

“At the most a year. You know, I just finished my 20th season, which is a blessing in itself,” he said. “Yeah. I’ve been in the NBA for more than half of my life which is a blessing, but it’s definitely, these years you do not get back with your kids, with your family.”

Paul, now 39, spoke with a tone of gratitude and realism, acknowledging that while his two-decade-long career has been an incredible journey, it’s also come at a personal cost.

Time away from loved ones, especially his children and extended family, is something he’s become increasingly aware of.

“I’m born and raised in North Carolina, so my granny who watches every single game that I play, every single night, I just miss those moments,” he continued. “I just don’t get to see her and hug her along with all my uncles and aunts as much as I love to.”

Now a free agent after playing the 2024–25 season with the San Antonio Spurs, Paul is reportedly hoping to sign with a West Coast team, ideally one that brings him closer to his family in Los Angeles.

That desire to balance the final chapter of his career with quality time at home seems to be guiding his decisions both on and off the court.
