Deandre Ayton is on track to join the Los Angeles Lakers after reaching a buyout agreement with the Portland Trail Blazers just before the start of free agency, clearing the path for him to sign with a new team.
According to league sources, Ayton is widely expected to sign with the Lakers once he officially clears waivers.
The Lakers have been actively seeking a reliable frontcourt addition, specifically at the center position, and Ayton fits that need both in terms of talent and experience.
A former No. 1 overall pick, Ayton offers size, rebounding, and scoring in the paint – areas the Lakers have prioritized upgrading this offseason.
His potential arrival would give Los Angeles a significant boost next to stars like LeBron James and Luka Dončić as the team retools its roster.
Before the Lakers emerged as front-runners, the Milwaukee Bucks reportedly explored the possibility of signing Ayton. However, Milwaukee shifted its focus and ultimately finalized a deal with Myles Turner instead, closing that door.
Ayton, who averaged 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds last season with Portland, became expendable after the Trail Blazers drafted Donovan Clingan and added Yang Hansen to their already crowded frontcourt.
The Blazers also had concerns about Ayton’s approach and discipline, which contributed to their willingness to part ways.
Now a free agent, Ayton will likely find a fresh start in Los Angeles, where he can revitalize his career in a more competitive environment and under brighter lights.
