The Portland Trail Blazers have officially agreed to a multiyear contract extension with head coach Chauncey Billups, sources confirm to ESPN. Billups, who has been at the helm since 2021, will remain with the team as it looks to continue its development and rebuild for the future.

Billups finished the final guaranteed year of his initial contract with the Blazers this season. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the extension was reached after a series of negotiations between Blazers officials and Billups’ representation, led by Andy Miller of Klutch Sports.

Since January 19, Billups has guided Portland to a .550 winning percentage, which places the team among the league’s top five in defensive rankings during that span, according to ESPN Research.

Billups has also been instrumental in developing the team’s young talent, including Deni Avdija, Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, Donovan Clingan, and Toumani Camara.

The Blazers’ decision to extend Billups comes amidst a season where the franchise has been evaluating its direction. Portland finished the season with a 36-46 record, securing 12th place in the Western Conference. The team showed flashes of promise but still faces the challenge of competing in a stacked conference.
