Luka Doncic exploded for 39 points as the Los Angeles Lakers dominated the Houston Rockets, 140-109, on Friday night. The victory clinched the Lakers the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs and secured their second Pacific Division title in the past 13 seasons.
The Lakers (50-31) showcased their offensive prowess, led by Doncic, who also added eight rebounds and seven assists. Austin Reaves contributed 23 points, while LeBron James chipped in 14 before resting for the final 19 minutes of the game.
Los Angeles’ win marks their second 50-win season in the past 14 years. The Lakers’ dominant performance against Houston (52-29) also ensures that both James and Doncic will have significant rest before the start of the playoffs.
With several key players missing for the Rockets, including Alperen Sengun, Dillon Brooks, and Fred VanVleet, Houston was short-handed throughout the game. Coach Ime Udoka opted to rest six of the team’s top seven scorers, a move that reflects the Rockets’ focus on player health as they prepare for the playoffs.
Despite the shorthanded roster, Cam Whitmore impressed for Houston, scoring a career-high 34 points. However, it was not enough to overcome the Lakers’ firepower, with Los Angeles shooting 60.9% from the field and 51.4% from three-point range.
Bronny James, LeBron’s son, made a brief appearance in the game, playing the final 4:23 and scoring three points.
The Lakers’ defensive effort also played a key role, with Dorian Finney-Smith adding 18 points, including six three-pointers. Los Angeles’ well-rounded performance sealed the win in front of a lively crowd at the Crypto.com Arena.
