Josh Giddey could be in line for a major payday as an NBA insider expects the Chicago Bulls to retain him in free agency.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said he anticipates the Bulls will re-sign Giddey to a contract worth around $30 million per season.

“This is the kind of play I thought he would have all year,” Windhorst said, via FOX Sports. “His role was sort of limited. After the trades, they’ve opened up his role, and this is the player he can be.”

The Australian guard was acquired by Chicago on June 21, 2024, in a trade that sent Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Since joining the Bulls, Giddey has averaged 13.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists in 29.7 minutes per game.

With his rookie contract set to expire this summer, the 22-year-old will become a restricted free agent, giving Chicago the right to match any offer he receives.

Windhorst pointed to recent contracts for young point guards as a potential benchmark for Giddey’s next deal.

“The going rate for a starting point guard in the NBA is around $30 million,” Windhorst said. “He is their starter.”

He referenced Immanuel Quickley’s five-year, $162 million extension with the Toronto Raptors as a possible comparison.

Quickley’s deal averages $32 million per season, and Windhorst suggested Giddey could aim for a similar contract.

Chicago currently holds the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference with a 27-38 record, sitting 9.8 games behind a direct playoff spot.

The Bulls are also 4.5 games ahead of the 11th-seeded Philadelphia 76ers, positioning themselves for a Play-In Tournament berth.

Giddey’s future in Chicago could be influenced by the team’s direction and willingness to commit significant salary to him long-term.

His versatility and playmaking have been valuable, but his shooting efficiency and defensive impact remain areas for improvement.

The Bulls’ front office must decide whether he fits their long-term vision, especially with key decisions looming on other contracts.

His upcoming free agency will be one of the Bulls’ most important offseason storylines as they look to build a competitive roster.
