Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers are expected to decide his left knee by the end of this week, according to sources close to Jake Fischer.
Embiid has consulted with over 10 doctors to find a solution for the ongoing pain, swelling, and discomfort in his knee. This issue follows multiple meniscus surgeries he has already undergone in the past.
While the big man is hopeful that he can avoid season-ending surgery, the path to full recovery remains unclear.
He is looking for a treatment option that would enable him to regain his MVP form, but neither the Sixers’ medical staff nor outside specialists have been able to find a definitive solution.
If Embiid does require a major surgery, it would not only sideline him for the remainder of the current season, but potentially part of the next one as well.
To make matters more complicated, Embiid and the Sixers appear to be out of sync regarding his treatment plan.
When ESPN’s Lisa Salters reported that Embiid had indicated he might need offseason surgery, sources revealed that this news caught the team off guard, suggesting a lack of communication between the star player and the organization.
Embiid has played 9 seasons for the 76ers. He has averaged 27.7 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 452 regular-season games.
He was selected to play in 7 All-Star games and has won 1 MVP award.
