Knicks center Mitchell Robinson will not make his season debut on Wednesday against the Philadelphia 76ers, but he is progressing toward a return after undergoing ankle surgery, which has kept him out for the entirety of the 2024/25 season, according to Dan Martin of The New York Post.

Head coach Tom Thibodeau shared on Tuesday that Robinson has been performing well and has been “very active” during workouts and practices as he nears his comeback.

Thibodeau indicated that Robinson will likely be gradually reintegrated into the Knicks’ rotation. He highlighted Robinson’s importance to the team, calling him an “elite” pick-and-roll defender, rim protector, and offensive rebounder.

Thibodeau emphasized that Robinson would have played a major role for the team if he had been healthy this season.

“I think you have to look at it and say, ‘OK, Mitch was projected to be the starting center on the team,'” Thibodeau stated.

“So we’ve gone fifty-something games without our starting center. I think guys have done a really good job stepping in. Could we do better? I always believe we could do better.”
