According to Tim Bontemps, the Memphis Grizzlies have reportedly engaged in trade discussions involving point guard Marcus Smart in recent weeks.

Smart, a seasoned guard known for his defensive prowess, has faced challenges staying on the court, appearing in only 38 games across the past two seasons due to a series of injuries.

During Smart’s current absence due to a finger injury, younger players like Jaylen Wells, GG Jackson, and Vince Williams Jr. have stepped up and demonstrated notable potential, contributing effectively to the Grizzlies’ rotation.

Their emergence may have influenced the team’s openness to exploring trade options for Smart. For other playoff-contending teams aiming to bolster their defense, the guard’s skill set could prove valuable.

He offers extensive playoff experience and a reputation as a fierce competitor capable of locking down opposing guards. Financial considerations also play a role in the Grizzlies’ decision-making.

By trading Smart and shedding his $21.6 million salary for the 2025-2026 season, Memphis would gain greater flexibility to negotiate a potential contract extension for their defensive anchor Jaren Jackson Jr. and secure the future of key forward Santi Aldama through a re-signing.

Smart has played 11 seasons for the Celtics and Grizzlies. He has averaged 10.7 points, 4.6 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 619 regular-season games. He has won 1 Defensive Player of the Year award.
