Dorian Finney-Smith expressed excitement about joining the Los Angeles Lakers after being traded by the Brooklyn Nets. The forward, along with Shake Milton, was acquired in exchange for D’Angelo Russell and Maxwell Lewis in a deal that reshaped the Lakers’ roster.

“If you play in Brooklyn, you know what I mean. You don’t want to be the little brother in the city. So I’m finally the big brother. It feels good,” Finney-Smith said when asked about his transition to Los Angeles, per Stefan Bondy.

The trade brings significant upgrades to the Lakers’ depth. Finney-Smith, known for his versatility, has been enjoying a career-best season, shooting 44% from beyond the arc. His defensive skills and ability to guard multiple positions align perfectly with the team’s need for a reliable two-way player alongside stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Milton, a guard with proven playmaking and scoring abilities, bolsters the Lakers’ backcourt. His team-friendly contract, which includes two non-guaranteed years, provides Los Angeles with financial flexibility while addressing their need for consistent bench production.

The move also benefits the Lakers financially, as trading Russell’s $36 million expiring contract saves the team $15 million in salary and luxury tax penalties. This adjustment increases Los Angeles’ flexibility under the NBA’s second-apron restrictions, giving them $3.5 million in available margin.

For the Lakers, this trade strengthens their championship aspirations. Finney-Smith brings steady production, averaging 10.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists this season. Meanwhile, Milton offers much-needed scoring depth, ensuring the Lakers can maintain offensive pressure even when their stars are resting.
