Former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins has criticized the New Orleans Pelicans’ decision to draft Zion Williamson, suggesting the franchise was not the ideal fit for the young star.

Speaking on the Run It Back Show by FanDuel TV, Cousins pointed to Williamson’s weight concerns and the cultural challenges in New Orleans as reasons why the pairing was problematic from the start.

“When this guy was getting drafted, we knew he was going to New Orleans, and there was a weight concern. That was bad then,” said Cousins, via ClutchPoints.

He further highlighted New Orleans’ lifestyle, saying, “That’s a place you go and gain ten pounds. You go out there, you drink, have a good time. That’s what the culture of New Orleans is.”

Cousins’ remarks come as the Pelicans navigate yet another season plagued by injuries, including a hamstring issue that has sidelined Williamson since earlier this month.

Williamson, who is listed at 284 pounds, has played in just six games this season, averaging 22.7 points, 8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists over 31 minutes per contest.

Despite his undeniable talent, injuries and fitness have remained persistent hurdles for the 24-year-old since entering the league in 2019.

Cousins, who briefly played for the Pelicans in 2018 before suffering an Achilles injury, has firsthand experience with the team’s challenges.
