Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors are reportedly still far apart in their extension negotiations, with no resolution expected before the upcoming deadline. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, both sides have been engaged in discussions, but significant gaps remain as they work toward a possible extension.

Charania revealed on ESPN’s NBA Today that talks between Kuminga and the Warriors may extend into the season. “I’m told both sides are still far apart in extension conversations between now and Monday,” Charania stated. He added that Kuminga may want to bet on himself and test his market value as a restricted free agent next summer.

Kuminga, 22, is entering the final year of his four-year, $24.8 million rookie-scale contract. His performance last season, where he posted career-high averages of 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 26.4 minutes per game, has increased his value and raised expectations for the young forward.

The Warriors, on the other hand, want to see how Kuminga develops this season before committing to a long-term, lucrative deal. While the team recognizes Kuminga’s potential, they may be cautious about offering a near-max extension at this point in his career.

Draymond Green, one of Kuminga’s veteran teammates, has publicly expressed high expectations for the forward. Green recently stated that if Kuminga does not become an All-Star during the 2024-25 season, it would be considered a failure.

This situation highlights the delicate balance for the Warriors, who need Kuminga to take a significant step forward while also managing their financial flexibility. As the franchise continues to navigate the challenges of maintaining a competitive roster around core players like Stephen Curry and Green, decisions on young talent like Kuminga become crucial for their long-term success.

For now, both sides appear prepared for the possibility that extension talks could carry into the season, with Kuminga potentially playing out his contract and testing the market as a restricted free agent next year. While the Warriors would have the right to match any offer, the uncertainty surrounding his future could influence his performance and the team’s decision-making.
