Mike "Big Mike" Richmond in the 90's winning a basketball championship overseas

Philadelphia, PA – October 17, 2024 – It is with profound sadness that the American Basketball Hall of Fame announces the passing of basketball legend Mike “Big Mike” Richmond. Richmond, a 2023 inductee into the Hall of Fame, passed away last Saturday at the age of 60. He leaves behind a legacy that has touched countless lives both on and off the court.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Richmond was a high school basketball All-American known for his towering 6’8″ frame and extraordinary athleticism. Renowned for his high-flying dunks and impeccable shooting, he was a dominant force on the court, a playground legend, and an inspiration to many. After a standout high school career, Richmond went on to play at New Mexico Junior College, where he averaged 20 points per game, before continuing his basketball journey at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

In 1987, Richmond was drafted 3rd overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Draft. While his NBA career was short-lived, Richmond embarked on a 14-year professional basketball career in the CBA and overseas, making his mark internationally from 1988 to 2002. After his playing career, Richmond remained deeply committed to the game, working with youth basketball programs across the country and coaching in semi-professional leagues. He also toured with the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters as a coach for the Washington Generals.

In 2023, Richmond’s outstanding contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the American Basketball Hall of Fame.

Lamont “Showboat” Robinson, founder and CEO of the American Basketball Hall of Fame, and a close friend of Richmond for nearly two decades, expressed his deep sorrow over Richmond’s passing: “Big Mike was like a brother to me. When I got the news, I was in total shock. I’m going to miss my friend, and the basketball world will miss him too.”

Richmond’s impact on the basketball community extended far beyond his playing days. He was a beloved mentor and coach, dedicating his time and talents to shaping the next generation of basketball players. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched.

The American Basketball Hall of Fame and the global basketball community mourn the loss of Mike Richmond, and our thoughts and prayers are with his brother Joe Richmond, and the rest of the Richmond family and friends during this difficult time.
