DeMar DeRozan, who recently signed with the Sacramento Kings, has spoken candidly about his struggles with depression.
In an appearance on ESPN’s First Take promoting his memoir Above the Noise, DeRozan addressed how today’s world intensifies mental health challenges.
He explained (h/t Michael Aaron Gomez of ClutchPoints), “We live in such an opinion-based universe now. You can’t express nothing without outside people trying to tear that down.”
DeRozan emphasized the role of social media, noting that everyone becomes a part of the media the moment they pick up their phone.
He shared how the constant flow of opinions and instant reactions can easily push a situation “over the top,” adding more pressure to an already challenging environment.
DeRozan has long been an advocate for mental health awareness, especially after he publicly revealed his battle with depression.
His openness, alongside fellow NBA player Kevin Love, has contributed to important changes within the league.
Their decision to share their personal experiences led the NBA to adopt a rule requiring each team to have at least one licensed mental health professional on staff.
DeRozan’s efforts aim to destigmatize mental health issues, especially within the athletic community, where athletes often feel pressured to hide their struggles.
In his First Take interview, DeRozan highlighted how today’s opinion-driven culture can make it more difficult for individuals to express their feelings without fear of judgment.
He called for more open conversations about mental health, explaining that breaking the stigma is crucial for those suffering in silence.
As the conversation around mental health in professional sports continues to grow, DeRozan remains at the forefront of promoting understanding and support.
He stressed that overcoming the stigma surrounding mental health is not just about individuals, but about creating a culture that allows everyone to feel heard and supported.
