Magic Johnson has urged Los Angeles Lakers fans to be patient as JJ Redick steps into his new role as head coach, despite having no prior coaching experience.
The Lakers made a bold move this offseason by replacing head coach Darvin Ham with Redick, a former player known for his sharp shooting but untested as a coach.
Johnson emphasized that Redick needs time to understand how to utilize the team’s talent effectively and determine which strategies will work best.
“We as Lakers fans gotta give JJ Redick, our new coach, some time to really help him understand how to utilize the talent, how to coach the talent, and then also what schemes will work, and what schemes won’t work,” Johnson said, via Daniel Starkand of Lakers Nation.
He acknowledged the difficulty of Redick’s transition but expressed confidence that the presence of LeBron James and Anthony Davis would aid in the adjustment process.
“This is not going to be easy for him. But I think having LeBron as your captain [helps] and one of the greatest that’s ever laced them up in AD,” Johnson noted, underscoring the importance of the Lakers’ star players in supporting their new coach.
Johnson pointed out that Redick’s success would require learning how to coach and manage a team with high expectations in a competitive environment.
He also highlighted the importance of Redick’s ability to develop effective game plans that maximize the strengths of key players like James and Davis.
Johnson’s comments came in an interview with Jim Hill on Sports Central LA, where he stressed the importance of patience during this period of adjustment.
