2012 Detroit Pistons #9 pick Andre Drummond remembers being woken up early in the morning by his agent for a pre-draft workout with the 3x NBA champs.

“I worked out for Detroit at like 4 in the morning the night before the draft. I was sleeping and my agent called me, he was like, ‘Are you awake?’ I said, ‘No, I’m not awake.’ He was like, ‘Well, I need you to get up and get dressed.’ I said, ‘What for?’ He was like, ‘I need you to get up and get dressed, you’re gonna go work out with Detroit.’ I’m like, ‘What am I gonna go work out for Detroit for? You told me I’m projected top five. Why would I go for a team that is at nine?’ He goes, ‘Trust me, you never know what happens in the draft. The draft’s crazy, just go do the workout.’ So boom, I get up. So now, it’s five o’clock in the morning, I get to the gym. Joe Dumars is there. George David, the assistant GM, was there. So they put me through a workout, I do pretty well obviously for 5 in the morning and a guy that was just sleeping.

“So it was a decent workout, and I remember I was sitting down and I was just looking out in the court like, ‘I really just worked out at 5 in the morning in front of these guys. I wonder what they’re thinking, because I know I’m f****** tired.’ So I’m like, ‘I’m wondering what they’re thinking?’ I remember George David put his hand on my shoulder, he was like, ‘I know you’re projected to go pretty high in the draft, but just know if you do happen to fall to 9, you have a home.’ And that sat with me throughout the whole day, I just kept thinking about that s***. I was like, ‘Well, worst comes to worst, I know I’m going somewhere and this team wants me.’”
