The anticipation surrounding this year’s No. 1 NBA draft pick, Victor Wembanyama, is palpable, even though he has yet to make his debut in an NBA game. Former NBA star Kenyon Martin recently weighed in on the expectations for the highly-touted French talent.

Speaking with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson on Bally Sports, Martin acknowledged Wembanyama’s unique position as the top pick in the draft.

He believes that Wembanyama landing with the San Antonio Spurs is an ideal scenario for the budding star’s development. According to Martin, San Antonio’s organization will provide a nurturing environment where the player can grow at his own pace, free from the burden of external expectations.

“He’s going to have his own expectations,” Martin explained. “He’s the No. 1 pick. Him being in San Antonio, I think is the perfect place for him because he’s able to grow, and the organization will protect him and take care of him.

“And he can go on his own expectations, not everyone else’s expectations. If you’re a real hooper and you know what you are, then your expectations should exceed anybody else’s.”
