It’s been over six years have passed, but the historic performances of both LeBron James and Kyrie Irving back in the 2016 NBA Finals have left an indelible impression on the side of Stephen Curry.
In his appearance on J.J. Redick’s The Old Man and The Three podcast (at 1:05:00 mark), Curry openly admitted that the heroic display of the duo in their marvelous series stands as the “craziest thing” he had ever seen.
“I’ve never seen two guys play at that level for three straight games,” Curry said. “It was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Bron and Kyrie were just on…I mean we played well, they just played better.”
Curry and the 73-9 Dubs were on the verge of cementing their place as the best team in league history, going up 3-1 over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the title stage. But the tandem of James and Irving steered their way to lead the Cavs en route to an unthinkable feat.
Their dominance started as they dropped 41 markers each to allow Cleveland to survive for another day in Game 5.
Following the must-win Game 6 within the jam-packed Quicken Loans Arena, the two then proceeded to put their capes on to lift the Cavaliers to their first championship in history, which also served as the first professional title for the city of Cleveland for 52 years.
Though the wounds of their downfall will still remind that unforgettable pain, Curry and the Warriors still edged the Cavs for the two more Finals that came over. Thankfully enough, they are still in relevance upon reviving their dynasty last season.
