Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens will reportedly return for the 2021-22 NBA season, despite the team underachieving this year.
“This is still a Boston organization with two star players in [Jaylen] Brown and [Jayson] Tatum with a coach Brad Stevens who is going to be back,” Adrian Wojnarowski said on ESPN’s Get Up. “The idea that his job might be in jeopardy is just not accurate. … They’re gonna chalk this season up as a disappointment. I do think you’ll see some roster movement this offseason, but I don’t think you’re gonna see any changes in their leadership.”
Trade deadline acquisition Evan Fournier will be a free agent this offseason and the team might even explore trade options for Kemba Walker.
Stevens is 354-282 in his eight seasons with the Celtics and has reached the Eastern Conference Finals three times in 2017, 2018 and 2020.
The Celtics signed the 44-year-old coach to a contract extension back in August 2020, so he likely won’t be going anywhere for the foreseeable future.
The Celtics play the Washington Wizards for a chance to be the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
If they lose, they will then have the opportunity to play the winner of the Charlotte Hornets-Indiana Pacers play-in game for a chance to be the No. 8 seed in the playoffs.
