On October 10, the former basketball coach, Tex Winter, has died at the age of 96. He was one of the architects of triangle offense – the system which was the basis of the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers championships.

Tex Winter joined the Bulls in 1985 and together with coach Phil Jackson formed a long-time and one of the most efficient coaching pairs in basketball history.

Speaking about his time in the Chicago Bulls, a 6-time NBA champion, Michael Jordan, said, per Chicago Tribune: “I learned so much from Coach Winter. He was a pioneer and a true student of the game.

His triangle offense was a huge part of our six championships with the Bulls. He was a tireless worker. Tex was always focused on details and preparation and a great teacher. I was lucky to play for him. My condolences to his family”.

Many people from basketball community paid their devoirs to Tex Winter and his legacy, among those the current NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, in his statement said, per ESPN: “Like James Naismith, Tex Winter was an educator at heart who deeply believed in the values of the game of basketball – teamwork, discipline and selflessness.

A pioneering Hall of Famer with 10 NBA Championships, he taught those values to generations of players and coaches, leaving a legacy that will forever be part of our history”.

Tex Winter was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on April 2, 2011.
