Leicester Riders defend BBL Trophy with ease

Leicester Riders retained their 2017 BBL Trophy crown after a resounding 91-58 win over Plymouth Raiders in Glasgow on Sunday afternoon.

Taylor King picked up the game’s MVP award after finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds with Pierre Hampton adding 16 points in less than 15 minutes.

It was King set the tone with the first five points of the game as he guided Riders to a 27-7 lead after an incredibly one-sided first quarter.

It took Plymouth four minutes to eventually open their account with a three from Daryl Corletto, who had 20 points in defeat.

“What a game,” King said.

“We were very well prepared, did a great job coming together in practice and it showed tonight. We take it on the defensive end first and go from there.

“We have a great bunch of guys, a great coach and I’m very proud to be on this team.”

It was the largest margin of victory in a BBL Trophy final, a mark that is harsh on Plymouth but despite decent spells, were forever playing catch-up to a vastly superior Leicester side.

“We had the two weeks to prepare and we needed that as we were not 100 percent healthy coming in,” said a delighted Riders coach Rob Paternostro.

“I could see that the guys were eager to play and we did a great job. We set the tone early with some great plays at both ends and I thought the bench was excellent today.

“I’m proud to coach this team – they gave it everything they have got.”
