LeBron James is likely to retire following the 2025–26 NBA season, according to an ESPN poll reported by Tim Bontemps.
The poll showed seven respondents expecting James to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers, while five projected retirement. Four chose a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and a few others picked Golden State, Dallas, or Miami.
James, entering his 23rd NBA season, re-signed with the Lakers on a two-year, $104 million contract last summer, which included a player option for the second year.
The 40-year-old has continued to break records, including surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most career regular season minutes played and achieving over 50,000 combined career points in the regular season and playoffs.
This season, James has recorded multiple triple-doubles, including a streak of four consecutive games in November 2024, tying the Lakers franchise record alongside Magic Johnson and Russell Westbrook.
On February 6, 2025, he became the oldest player to score 40+ points in a game at 40 years and 38 days, joining Michael Jordan as one of two players to do so at age 40 or older.
James also made history with his son Bronny, becoming the first father-son duo to appear in an NBA game together. This milestone came during his 2024–25 season debut.
Despite injuries, including a groin issue in March and a knee sprain in April, James returned to play, delivering key performances such as a game-winning buzzer-beater against the Indiana Pacers.
He tied Vince Carter for the most NBA seasons played and became the second NBA player to post a triple-double at age 40 or older, highlighting his longevity and consistent performance.
Scouts remain divided about his future, with some believing the Lakers offer the clearest path for his remaining playing years, while others view the upcoming season as his final run.
James’ legacy includes four NBA championships, four Finals MVPs, 19 All-Star selections, and a career average of 27 points, 7.4 assists, and 7.5 rebounds per game. His impact on and off the court continues to influence the league.
