Lietuvos Rytas 2009/10
Gedvydas Vainauskas, the owner of Rytas, said that four players will leave the team and they will be replaced with the new ones. He also revealed that two of them have already agreed to sign the contracts and two are very close but Rytas have to wait until domestic leagues are finished. From what we know already Šikšnius and Newley are done deals. The question is who are the other two and who will be those four players that will depart. It's certain that Ginevičius is out. Sinica shouldn't stay either. Then the other two are among Zavackas, Jomantas and Babrauskas.

Kelys is the third with contract. And I would say Baynes and Miloševič might be under consideration as well, but most likely will stay.

Kelys made contract with Lietuvos Rytas year ago. I think that Zavackas, Sinica, Ginevičius and Babrauskas/Jomantas/Baynes leave team. I hope that Jomantas could make a new contract with Lietuvos Rytas. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Miloševič, Gecevičius, Jomantas, Bjelica, Baijramovič, Valančiūnas in Rytas next season.

They are offering the best they can for Babrauskas, they want him in the team.

Vainauskas will offer small contracts to Zavackas and Ginevičius, but he doubts they will agree with that.

Sinica and Baynes under the consideration. As J.V. put it, Sinica's contract is too big compered with the contribution for the team. Baynes might leave the team, because Valančiūnas is going to get big minutes and he is their priority (I like this idea ).

Buterlevičius staying with the team, unless he would want to leave it him self.

If Baynes leaving, they will look after new center, and ALSO they are looking for the different style PG than they already have (Kelys, Miloševič), "something like P. Popovič" (sounds good ).

Rytas is saying their goal is to reach quarter finals of Euroleague.

All of the above is interesting, especially Rytas's goals for next season. It's a good thing that they have such ambitions. The other thing is making them come true which is much more difficult.

There is supposed an in-depth interview with Vainauskas tomorrow so I'll wait for it to come out before making further comments.

It's getting interesting. Vainauskas have said that Newley might get a better contract with other team...and all rumors about Kurtinaitis...I hope he wouldn't leave team but it seems that Vainauskas and Kurtinaitis opinion about Ž.Kelys isn't same. :/

Kurtinaitis is a stubborn, we saw that plenty of times (including NT as well). If everything would depend on Kurtinaitis, possibly we would wait two more years while Valančiūnas get a decent chance. The vision is in Vainauskas hands, and I actually like it because most of the time he proves he knows what he's doing. Currently he's one of the best GM in Europe. Kurtinaitis did let us know that he isn't a fan of Miloševič as well, but Vainauskas believes in this guy (I'm not sure about it though), so Kurtinaitis will have to live with that if he wants to work in Rytas. Same with Kelys. Kelys is talented player, I believe he's maybe the most talented young PG in Lithuania, and I'm happy finally there is man in Lithuania who have a word for these young guys.

The way I see it, Kurtinaitis doesn't want Kelys in his team because of his playing style which is 'chaotic' just as Kalnietis's.

So basically the situation is as follows:

 • Kurtinaitis isn't too happy with the fact that Vainauskas makes all the decisions, especially signing the players

 • Kurtinaitis doesn't want Kelys on the team but Vainauskas put it very clearly that Kelys will play regardless of what Kurtinaitis thinks about him

 • Vainauskas isn't too happy with the way the team played in the second half of the season

 • Vainauskas publicly doubted whether Kurtinaitis is capable to achieve the goals for the next season

All these facts suggest that Kurtinaitis's days at Rytas are counted. It's possible that he will stay. On the other hand, would he want to stay after all these comments about him? Or would Vainauskas keep the coach of which abilities he isn't totally sure? If there will be a new coach then he will be foreigner and will surely come from BeoBasket agency. Looking at that list I can't really see a coach who would be both affordable and have the ability to reach Rytas's goals since Vainauskas said that there are only two Lithuanian coaches capable of doing that - Jonas Kazlauskas and Rimas Kurtinaitis. That suggests that the coach must have already proven his skills. If so, then only Bozidar Maljkovic and Oktay Mahmuti meet this criteria among BeoBasket clients (I'm not mentioning those who are contracted to other teams). I'd put Saso Obradovic and Ivan Jeremic at the second tier. Jeremic has already worked at Rytas as an assistant coach of Aleksandar Trifunovic a couple of years age.

So if Vainauskas sticks to his words, Kurtinaitis should stay.

I have a feeling it's all over with Kurtinaitis in Rytas. The way Vainauskas acted in award ceremony gave me the reason to believe so. Anyway, it will be clear soon.

You are right about that.

Quote:Drazen Anzulovic to coach Lietuvos Rytas next season

Lietuvos Rytas have already found a replacement for Rimas Kurtinaitis. According to both Croatian and Lithuanian media, Drazen Anzulovic is set to become a successor of Kurtinaitis. 43-year-old Croatian coach is currently unemployed after his last club, BC Donetsk, has been disbanded.

Jonas Vainauskas, GM of Lietuvos Rytas, wasn't too happy with the way the team played under Kurtinaitis. As a result of that the search for a new coach has been ongoing for some time.

Drazen Anzulovic has Euroleague experience as he coached Croatian champions Cibona Zagreb. He has also coached Ural Great in Russia, Spirou Charleroi in Belgium and BC Donetsk in Ukraine. Anzulovic was an assistant coach of Jasmin Repesa at Croatian national team in last year's Eurobasket.

http://www.talkbasket.net/news/drazen-an...-3057.html

My conclusion that Kurtinaitis is staying was incorrect because it was based on the hope that the new coach could only come from BeoBasket. Anzluovic is not a client of BeoBasket agency (at least not on their official website). Let's hope that the arrival of Anzulovic won't start another changing-coach-every-few-months period.

I will stick to my opinion that Rytas will once again have a better coach than Zalgiris. That's if you compare the careers of both coaches (I'm presuming that Grigas will take charge of Zalgiris). Of course there's no guarantee that the more experienced coach will be better.

As I said in Lithuanian basketball web sites - if Vainauskas have found better coach, so why not? Kurtinaitis is good, but better coach is better for the team <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Biggrin' />

Yeah, Vainauskas believes in young players...Some players from Perlas will play in Lietuvos Rytas next season (Bendžius, Dambrauskas, Staniulis) but I don't see Viskontas? If Samėnas play for Perlas, then it's a bad thing that Perlas could have two good point guards, because at the time, one of time may not play. :/

By the way, I've heard that other two new players will be at level of national teams. And...it's official that Babrauskas, Zavackas, Ginevičius and Sinica won't play in Lietuvos Rytas next season.

Add Baynes to that list too. According to Vainauskas, it will be the best Rytas team in the last five years. If those new players are members of their national teams then my guess is they are Europeans. Of course it would be interesting to speculate on who will those players be but we will know about them very soon.

Oh, I forgot to mention Baynes. Yes, you're right. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I think that new center migth be from ex-yugo country which have good experience in european basketball...but as it's said, if new coach want Bjelica to play as center then we need new power forward - Katelynas is perfect choice but I don't think there's a chance that he may play in Lietuvos Rytas and besides are rumors that Žalgiris is in talks with him. I think we should keep eye on BeoBasket agency. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
