Zalgiris to finalise deal with Zouros

It is not official yet, but everything points to the direction that Elias Zouros will be the next Head Coach of Zalgiris Kaunas, while the announcement is being expected within the following days.

According to Greek media, the two sides have agreed upon everything and Zouros will take over the team immediately in order to prepare it for the Top16 stage of the Euroleague.

44-year old Zouros was the Head Coach of Olympiacos from 2000 to 2002, and will be facing the Greek club from the bench of Zalgiris, if all goes as planned, as the two teams were drawn in group H of the Top16.

Moreover, Zouros was named Eurocup Coach of the Year for the 2009-2010 season, as he led his team, Panellinios to the Final Four of the competition, eventually losing to later Champions Valencia, in the semifinal held in the Fernando Buesa Arena with 92-80
It's official now: Zouros is going to coach Zalgiris

Four days before it opens the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16 on the road, Zalgiris Kaunas has a new head coach, its third of the season, having signed Ilias Zouros of Greece on Saturday. Zouros, 44, arrives from Panellinios, where he led the club to its best results in decades last season and was named the Eurocup Coach of the Year. Zouros guided Panellinios to both the Eurocup and Greek League semifinals. Zouros replaces Rimantas Grigas, who will return to his previous job of sports director for Zalgiris one month after taking over the bench when Aco Petrovic was released. Zalgiris starts Top 16 play on Wednesday in Valencia, Spain against Power Electronics.

Zouros started his coaching career at the age of 20 with the cadet and the junior teams at Panionios. He moved next to Peristeri, serving as assistant coach to the senior team. He continued as an assistant coach at Sporting, Maroussi, Olympiacos and the Greek national team. In the summer of 2000, he was named head coach of Olympiacos, replacing the legendary Giannis Ioannidis, and led that team to the Euroleague quarterfinals. He remained at Olympiacos until February 2002, and then moved to Sagesse in Lebanon, guiding the club to the Asian Club Championship. Afterwards, he returned to Greece with Near East. He coached Aris Thessaloniki in 2005-06, leacing after three months to take over on the French club Racing Paris Levallois, where he remained until he signed for Panellinios in December 2007. Zouros also enjoys the distinction of having coached Olympiacos in the historic first game of the new Euroleague in October 2000 on the road at Real Madrid. The bench at Zalgiris will be his second Euroleague job.

Nice. One more reason to support Zalgiris.

I do actually. Like all new generation Greek coaches... Zourous, Sfairopoulos, Dikeoulakos, Katsikaris, Bartzokas...
Zouros is a good coach and I believe that he will help Zalgiris a lot. I hope that he'll get the reinforcement that he needs to improve the team
I’m heard something new in the case about Mirza Begic.

Zalgiris Kaunas doesn’t want to release the player from his contract with the club and they have said that they want a compensation from the player of from the team that wants Mirza Begic.

But it will be very difficult for a team to get Mirza Begic out of his contract with Zalgiris. A couple of sources say that Zalgiris has made it clear who big the compensation must be to buy out his contract with them.

Zalgiris will ask a one million euros buy-out from the club that wants to get Mirza Begic away from Zalgiris. And if the club ,that’s interessed in Mirza Begic, doesn’t want to pay this compensation than Mirza Begic will have to pay the whole sum the buy out his contract with Zalgiris.

Last year Mirza Begic signed a three-year contract with Zalgiris. He still have one and half year of his contract left. This compesation is a lot for the player to pay it himself. And it’s very doubtful that a club will pay such money to buy out the contract of Mirza Begic.

Zalgiris has made is very clear that they will not release Mirza Begic from his contract with them and that he’ll only leave the club if a compensation( one million euros) is paid to Zalgiris.

Real Madrid is very interested in Mirza Begic because Ettore Messina is looking for another bigman who could come of the bench when his others bigmen, Ante Tomic and D’or Fischer, are in foul trouble or that they aren’t playing good enough.

The case about Mirza Begic has been on for a couple of weeks now and it looks like the end isn’t in sight yet.

Mirza Begic wants to leave Zalgiris and go to another club but he should have done it by another way. If it’s true that Zalgiris hasn’t paid him and he has a better offer from a better club( in the eyes of Mirza Begic) then he could leave to club with out paying a compensation.

But Zalgiris said that they have paid him correctly and he wants to leave because his managers have better offers from other clubs. It’s a very sad case for both Zalgiris as Mirza Begic.

Zalgiris is getting a bad image through Mirza Begic and that is not good for Zalgiris. They have had other problems since Mirza Begic left. Darius Salenga was tested positive on drugs and was suspended. Hopefully for Zalgiris all the bad will come to an end.

It’s bad for Mirza Begic because the compensation that Zalgiris is very high for a player like him. He isn’t a bad player but the price is too much. He can’t pay it himself and he hopes that a club who is interested in him will pay it. Because like I said before, the price that Zalgiris is asking for the buy-out of his contract is too much, no team will pay this kind of money.

Mirza Begic will have to hope that a club will pay it, even it’s one million euros. If no club is going to pay it then Mirza Begic will have to prove that Zalgiris didn’t paid him right. If he can’t prove it than Mirza Begic will have pay it himself( but he can’t and he won’t). Otherwise he has to sit out this season or go back and play for Zalgiris( but this is high unlikely). In the meantime he will have to wait and hope that Zalgiris will let the compensation go down so that the interested clubs will pay it. Maybe this will happen next season when Mirza Begin only has one year left on his contract.
There are many things that can be discussed related to Zalgiris but one thing is so absurd that I can't leave it unnoticed. As you may have read in the latest Romanov's interview, he wants all of the players to be used during the game. That's means that every single player must play some minutes no matter what. It doesn't matter how he plays on a particular night or what is the situation on the court.

The above requirement sounds already close to absurd if not absurd. Especially from the coach's point of view. But it seems that it's not that simple as asking the coach to use all players in every game. What actually happens is that the coach is told how many minutes each player must play and when the changes must be made. What we see is ice hockey-type player changes. In other words 3-4 players are changed at random moments during the game.

Recently the post by some person surfaced in Lithuania who posted supposedly how the orders given to the coach look like. It might have been a hoax based on how it was done but it pretty close to what happens in reality. Until some unusual things happened during yesterday's game against Valencia.

Elias Zouros was constantly putting his hand in his jacket. I was curious because that's not what you see during the games usually. That was his first game as a head coach of Zalgiris and you could think that he had some notes about the team. Although that sounds hard to believe since I saw many last-minute coach changes but never such thing happened as coach looking at some paper sheet constantly. Coaches are professionals (well, Zalgiris's coaches usually aren't) and they prepare for the games in advance and they also learn about their own players. So to me the idea that Zouros had some notes made by himself or by someone else about the team just as an information source seems highly doubtful.

But if you look at this case in the context of all the rumours about Romanov's interruption in the coach's work it starts to make sense. I don't think I have to talk (unless someone asks) about Romanov's way of running football teams before buying Zalgiris.

Now some screenshots from the game.

Zouros takes the papersheet out of his jacket and walks to Kostic (assistant coach who works with the club since the start of the season) and says something. Probably asking for an explanation or some advice.

Kostic says something to Zouros and then he puts the papersheet back in his jacket and walks to the secretariat probably asking for a substitution.

A closer look at what Zouros has in his hands.

He puts the papersheet in his jacket and gives a "wtf is this nonsense?" look.

Of course there might be another explanation but having in mind all the facts it seems very likely that he was given orders just as other coaches. Needless to say that such orders is an insult to the coach's dignity. Not only that it ties coach's hands as he is unable to do react on his own during the game but those are orders coming from a man who learned the rules of basketball a couple of years ago.
It's probably the receipt from the arena cantine...

There is a new law in Greece that states if you collect a bunch of receipts (about 3.000 euros or something) you get 10% discount from your income tax. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rofl3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rofl3' />
I wonder how the hell Romanov is making agreement with solid coaches. He will end up hiring second-rate fellas or will quit BB very soon. Well I can't support such circus.
Romanov should stop telling the coach what to do and let the coach do his job. Zouros is good coach and I believe he can help Zalgiris a lot but if Romanov keeps telling him what to do than it won't work. I think if Romanov doesn't stop with interfering in the coach his job( which he won't do because he think he knows best) then the coach will quit and leave the team. Romanov has a lot of money but he doesn't have the knowledge to be in control of the whole team

For Romanov is important that all players would be active members of THE MARKET. Žalgiris somehow tried to show that they are mad about Begič, but I think Romanov is damn happy about the outcome. Another thing, Žalgiris is his new toy and he wants to have remote control in his hands. Logically, what else would you expect from the rich person who doesn't value basketball as so? Ramonov saved Žalgiris from bankrupt, but he is not going to save this club from degradation that started in the midle of ex decade.
Yet another piece of evidence that the coaches of Zalgiris must follow player rotation that is decided before the game by Romanov. If some people had any doubt whether this was real or not then this should clear all of the doubts.

These are the screenshots taken from the TV show "Krepšinio pasaulyje". Zouros and his assistant coach visited Romanov's office just after he arrived in Kaunas. "Krepšinio pasaulyje" attended the meeting and recorded it. Here's the most interesting part:

In this image you can see Rimantas Grigas (Sports Director) who, according to Romanov, is nearly genius, writing something on the board while Zouros talks to Romanov at the table next to Grigas. Interestingly Grigas is writing something in four columns. Just like there are four quarters in the game. Let's take a closer look.

In this picture you can clearly see either the first letter of player's name or surname and a number next to it. In every case the number is not higher than 5. Just as none of the players in Zalgiris play more than 5 minutes in one quarter.

For example you can clearly see the following: C 2, De 4, P 2, OM 2 etc. That means Collins 2, Delininkaitis 4, Pocius 2, Omar [Samhan] 2 etc.

What I think will happen eventually is Romanov will get bored with his toy (Zalgiris) just as he let Hearts' coaches do their job and results came naturally. But until that happens we will have to see this unbelievable absurd.
I hope for Zouros that it will happen very soon because I don't think that he'll want to work like that
I've read an rumor that Zalgiris is interested in bringing Loren Woods back. I don't know if the rumor is true. Maybe some of you guys know more about this?

I think it's false rumours. And even there was the slightest interest in Woods, it will fade away once Zalgiris ends the first round of Top 16 with 0-3 record because there will be no point in bringing one more player, especially foreigner.

I saw comments of Greek fans after yesterday's game against Olympiacos. Even they were surprised to see 12 players playing for Zalgiris in the first quarter. The rest has been said in my and other members' posts above.

Sportalas.com quoted Greek media which said that Sabonis told to Romanov during the game: "My biggest mistake was that I handed the team to you". Romanov wasn't sitting next to Sabas in the second half and Zouros either was actually allowed to make his own decisions or he decided not to obey Romanov's orders and we saw a different game in the second half.

I always complained about Zalgiris not getting a good coach for a decade. Now they did but he's not allowed to coach. It's so annoying to see a good team and a good coach playing terribly because of one man's "wooden head" (that's Romanov's expression btw.).

Now when the hopes of advancing to the next round have nearly vanished maybe Zouros will be allowed to do his job at least in Euroleague.

It was fun to hear the crowd boo Collins when he was sent to the court and everyone clapped when he was sent to the bench. Finally the fans lost their patience and clearly showed that.

Here's hope that better times are coming.

You're right Vilius. Collins did nothing and he hasn't played many good games for Zalgiris since he returned to the club.

I find it very good that Sabas said this to Romanov. Romanov may have a lot of money but he destroys the club by his decision. He doesn't have the know how about basketball and he see Zalgiris as his personal toy( it's the same as his football club Hearts).

Zalgiris has a good team and they have a good coach in Zouros. I hope that Zouros can do his job from now on and let Zalgiris play the basketball that he has in mind, he needs the be in charge of the players and not Romanov. If Zouros is in charge of the players, Zalgiris will win more games than that they now do. The qualification for the next round is far away but I'm very sure that Zouros can let Zalgiris win some games in the Top 16

Hopefully Romanov will stop interfering with Zouros his job
Quote:Zalgiris adds Trent Plaisted

Zalgiris Kaunas added size and strength to its frontline with the signing of center Trent Plaisted for the remainder of the season. Plaisted (211, 24) arrives from Eurocup side Cedevita Zagreb, with whom he averaged 9.1 points and 3.9 rebounds over 19 minutes in seven games in that competition this season. He also posted 5.2 points and 3.7 rebounds over 15 minutes in 15 Adriatic League games. It was his second Eurocup season after posting 8.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks for Zadar last season. Plaisted played college basketball at Brigham Young University and started the 2008-09 season with Biella in Italy, but had that stint cut short due to injury. Zalgiris will be his first Euroleague team.

By the way: Collins played good for the first time in a long time last night against Fenerbache. Hopefully he'll continue like that the next games
