British Basketball League round up (week 3)

Worcester Wolves made it two wins from the weekend after grinding out wins in overtime against London Lions and then the next night against Cheshire Phoenix.

They defeated London Lions 63-62 after an extra session at the CopperBox Arena on Thursday night as the Wolves spoiled the home coming of new signing Matthew Bryan-Amaning, who signed the day before on a short-term deal.

Will Creekmore led the victors with 17 points, supported by Alex Owumi, who had 15.

Rod Brown led the Lions with 15 points, with Bryan-Amaning hitting 13 points and registering five blocks.

They then followed their win in the capital with a 94-90 home success over Cheshire Phoenix on Friday night.

Like their win over the Lions though, Worcester needed overtime to seal the win. Creekmore followed up his 17-point showing with a stunning double-double of 28 points and 22 rebounds over the Phoenix.

Reggie Middleton had 31 to lead Cheshire.

The other game on Friday night saw Newcastle Eagles thrash the BBL new boys Birmingham Knights 129-70 on Tyneside.

Malik Cooke had 27 points to lead the Eagles as they asserted their dominance from the outset, leading 34-17 after the first ten minutes and never looking back from there.

Brent Benson led Birmingham with 22.

Despite defeat on Friday, Birmingham were close to pulling off an upset but ultimately fell short, losing at home 102-95 to the Sheffield Sharks.

A game-changing 15-7 run in the fourth quarter pulled the visiting Sharks clear of the Knights as the game saw Birmingham’s Martyn Gayle and Sheffield’s Nick Lewis ejected in the closing minutes.

Brent Benson led all scorers for the Knights with 45 points, but it wasn’t enough. The victors were led by Jeremie Simmons’ 24 points.

Sunday saw Newcastle pick up their second win in week three with a convincing 112-98 win away to Manchester Giants.

The Eagles improve to 4-1 for the season so far while Manchester await their first win after four tries.

Malik Cooke led all scorers for the visitors with 32 points while Stefan Gill had 25 for the Giants.

Durham Wildcats eased to a 100-79 victory at Surrey United, who like Manchester are also looking for their first win.

After a close first quarter, Durham pulled clear in the second quarter to lead 62-49 at the half and had no problems from then.

Devin Ginty led all scorers for the victors with 28 points while Ceslovas Kucinskas had 24 points for United.

There were also wins for the Plymouth Raiders, as they picked up a road win at Glasgow Rocks 89-73 thanks to 27 points from Shane Walker and BBL champions Leicester Riders produced a defensive masterclass to beat the Cheshire Phoenix 78-43 and hold their opponents to below 45 points for the second game in a row.
