Euroleague seeks competitive team in United Kingdom

Euroleague Final Four next May which will take place in London for the first time in history could become a stepping stone for Euroleague to enter United Kingdom’s market for good.

Euroleague Commercial Assets (ECA) Assembly met on Tuesday in Barcelona to discuss various topics related to commercial issues of the Euroleague.

Among the topics discussed was the subject of entering new markets. A proposed strategy to invest in the United Kingdom was presented that seeks to grow the Euroleague fan base there, to deliver a world class basketball events, to source local partners, to increase media presence, to introduce the CSR program One Team, finally, to seek a competitive UK-based team for Euroleague.

At present none of the UK-based teams are participating in any European club competition due to the costs of such participation. A guaranteed place in Europe’s premiere club competition would help attract sponsors needed for the team to collect a budget to play in Euroleague.

The last time that a British team took part in Euroleague competition was back in 2001 as London Towers finished bottom of the group with a 0-14 record.
