Thon Maker, a former NBA forward, expressed his disappointment at being unable to represent South Sudan at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Maker had hoped to play for his native country but could not secure a necessary letter of clearance from Basketball Australia in time.
Having previously represented Australia in FIBA tournaments, Maker required the clearance to switch national teams.
Despite this setback, Maker is determined to play for South Sudan in future competitions.
“Sad day today,” Maker wrote in a message on X, formerly known as Twitter.
He explained that he began the process on April 5th, but the clearance arrived too late for the FIBA process.
“It has been decided that South Sudan federation claim for me is too late,” Maker added.
He mentioned that the appeal would continue but there is no chance for the Paris Olympics.
“I’m disappointed but my goal remains to compete in future competitions,” Maker stated.
Maker sent his best wishes to South Sudan, saying, “Good luck to SSD. My heart is with you #paris2024.”
South Sudan will make its Olympic debut in Group C alongside Puerto Rico, Serbia, and the United States.
The team will not be at full strength as it will also miss Bol Bol, who plays for the Phoenix Suns.
