Sasu Salin bids farewell to Ljubljana, moves to Gran Canaria

Finland international Sasu Salin has signed for Liga Endesa side Gran Canaria having parted company with Union Olimpija Ljubljana.

The 23-year-old guard insists that he needs a new challenge after spending five years in the Slovenian capital.

“I will never forget Ljubljana due to almost five seasons spent here, but it is time for me to write a new chapter in my career,” Salin said.

“I had a few offers in the past already but I never decided to accept it. This time was different and I am happy that we reached a mutual agreement with Union Olimpija.

“Union Olimpija put me on a basketball map as a young player and trusted me with a lot. I did my best on the court at any time.

“I want to say thanks to all the employees of the club, my teammates, coaches and, of course, the amazing Olimpija fans. Ljubljana will always have a special place in my heart.”

Salin averaged 7.4 points a game in the Adriatic League this season and a further 9.8 points in the Eurocup.

“Sasu is a player who gave a lot to the club and the club gave a lot to him as well,” Union Olimpija general manager Matevž Zupančič said.

“Despite everything, we need to be careful about the financial situation in the club. We reached a mutual agreement that was solid for both sides. We wish Salin the best of luck.

“We will not look for a replacement on his position at the time, because we believe we have good solutions in Slovenian young players Hrovat, Prepelič, and we are looking also in the future.”
