Despite being a young player, LaMelo Ball has a mindset that is more common among the previous generations of NBA players. The Charlotte Hornets sophomore thinks that players, especially high draft picks, should stay loyal to their original teams instead of going elsewhere to form super teams.
“I feel like I still kind of got that mentality that they had back in the day,” Melo said, via Joe Vardon of The Athletic. “Even with the switching teams and stuff, they never used to do that. You go to one team, you stay there.”
The youngest of the three Ball brothers thinks that should try to build a team as opposed to looking for better opportunities on other teams.
“You supposed to just go to a team and build from there—I feel like that’s how it should be,” he said. “Especially when you like a high pick too, most likely going to a team that wasn’t as good, so you try to make them better. I feel like that’s the whole process right there.”
LaMelo, who entered the NBA last season as the 3rd draft pick, averaged 15.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game during his rookie year with the Hornets.
