Angola and Guinea have claimed two of the final four spots up for grabs in the quarterfinals of AfroBasket 2021 after wins today in the qualification round.

In the first game, Angola took down Egypt 70-62.

Angola was led by Carlos Morais and Gerson Concalves, who scored 16 points and 13 points, respectively.

Egypt struggled from three-point, shooting 5-of-21 from deep.

They also left several points at the free throw line, shooting 9-of-17.

Angola will now face a strong Senegal team, who outscored their opponents by 100 in group play, in the quarterfinals on Sept. 1.

In the final game of the day, Guinea shocked host Rwanda 72-68.

Rwanda was up by as many as 11, but Guinea fought back and outscored Rwanda 28-14 in the fourth quarter.

Guinea had balanced scoring with Cedric Mansare (16 points), Cheick Sekou Conde (15 points), Mohamed Queta (13 points) and Abdoulaye Sy (12 points).

Kenny Gasana led Rwanda with 28 points.

Guinea will now face Cote d’Ivoire in the quarterfinals on Sept. 1.

This is the farthest that Guinea has advanced at an AfroBasket and their most-ever wins (2) at an AfroBasket.

Coming into the tournament, Guinea was the lowest-ranked team in the field (No. 118 and No. 21 in Africa), but they continue to defy the odds.
