Updating an earlier report, Phoenix Suns star Chris Paul has declined an invitation to play for Team USA in the Summer Olympics, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
It was originally reported that Paul planned to commit to Team USA, but USA Basketball has known that Paul was trending toward this decision for several days, Wojnarowski also notes.
If the Suns reach the NBA Finals, there would be no break before the end of the season and the start of the July Olympics in Tokyo.
Instead, Milwaukee Bucks’ Jrue Holiday has committed to play for Team USA in the Olympics, according to Wojnarowski.
Holiday replaces Paul as the 11th player on the 12-man roster, joining teammate Khris Middleton, Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kevin Love, Brooklyn Nets’ James Harden and Kevin Durant, Miami Heat’s Bam Adebayo, Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker, Washington Wizards’ Bradley Beal, Portland Trail Blazers’ Damian Lillard, Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green and Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum.
Holiday, 31, will be a first-time Olympian.
Only one spot still remains on Team USA’s 12-man roster.
Training camp begins on July 6 in Las Vegas led by head coach Gregg Popovich.
The group stage of the men’s Olympic basketball tournament will take place from July 25 to Aug. 1, with the knockout round taking place from Aug. 3-7.
