Five Spurs players in health and safety protocols, DeMar DeRozan also out

San Antonio Spurs’ Rudy Gay, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Derrick White and Quinndary Weatherspoon are out Feb. 24 due to health and safety protocols.

Those five players are not traveling to the team’s next scheduled game against the Oklahoma City Thunder and they remain without a timeline to return.

“Each one is a little bit different,” said head coach Gregg Popovich. “It depends on the testing they do. So, I think a few more days, the quarantine period ends, but then there are a couple more days of more tests to see how it has affected them.”

The Spurs haven’t played since Feb. 14 after four players tested positive for COVID-19, forcing the team to quarantine in Charlotte for almost one week.

Additionally, DeMar DeRozan will also miss the game against the Thunder, as he is away from the team due to the passing of his father.

The Spurs recalled Luka Samanic and Tre Jones from the G League to ensure that they have the league-required eight available players.

After missing six games before the team’s COVID-19 pause, LaMarcus Aldridge could be available to play.

If Aldridge suits up, the Spurs will have 10 available players that includes Aldridge, Patty Mills, Dejounte Murray, Jakob Poeltl, Lonnie Walker IV, Trey Lyles, Drew Eubanks, Keita Bates-Diop, Samanic and Jones.

After the lengthy layoff, the Spurs were finally able to practice on Feb. 22.

“We’ve always had the philosophy that there are all these people, or groups of people, who have it worse than you do,” said Popovich. “And considering our positions in this world, we are very, very well off.”
