Steve Nash did not speak to Nets star Kevin Durant about taking over the coaching reins in Brooklyn. Nash, a two-time MVP as a player, will begin his coaching career with the Nets after getting hired by the organization earlier this month; it was initially thought that Durant and Kyrie Irving pulled the strings on the move.

The former point guard spoke to the media on Wednesday and claimed he was the one who reached out to Nets general manager Sean Marks and not the other way around.

He also revealed he did not speak to Durant about the job. Nash and Durant are known to have a good relationship stemming from the former’s consultancy position with Durant’s former team, the Golden State Warriors.

“Kevin and I have a relationship, we’re friends, but I did not talk to him specifically about this,” Nash noted (via SNY). “For me, it was really trying to hone in on what I could bring to the table here and fulfill what this franchise is looking for.”

Nash played 18 seasons in the NBA and was an All-Star on eight occasions. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
