Jankov Signs With Latvian Basketball Federation

The Latvian Basketball Federation has signed a contract with foreign basketball expert Kosta Jankov.

Currently Jankov works for the Golden State Warriors as a Director of International Scouting, however within next three years he will also advise the Latvian National Team.

This collaboration will as well benefit local Latvian coaches and national youth basketball teams of different ages.

Up until now, Jankov has worked as a coach for such clubs as ?Jugoplastika?, ?Unicaja?, ?Panathinaikos? and ?PSG?.

Last year Jankov was invited to be a part of the USA national team coaching staff for the World Championship in Japan as a European basketball school expert.

Jankov has already collaborated with one of the potential national team players ? Andris Biedrins. Jankov worked individually with Biedrins before the NBA draft.

"First of all, thank you for the kind welcome," Jankov said in a press conference.

"For the next three years I will spend one week in each month in Latvia. During these years I want to organise a Latvian basketball system so that later Latvian coaches themselves know what to do and how to continue the successful work. Not only coaches but also young players will in benefit from this system."

"I have good relationship with Karlis Muiznieks (head coach of the national team) and I will be glad to work with him. I will provide the help and consultation he will require. I know all the players on the team and it looks like an amazing atmosphere exists among them."

One of Jankov's players to watch will be Biedrins, who is coming off an exceptional season in the NBA.

"Andris Biedrins is an incredible person and an even more incredible player. The rest is unimportant. Andris is an adult and he knows well what he?s doing. It depends only on himself whether or not he will become a leader on and also off the court," Jankov remarked.

Jankov will begin the work with Karlis Muiznieks in the middle of July.

His range of duties is going to be quite vast ranging from the Latvian national team to the U14 youth national team.

Jankovs? eight main directions for the improvement of Latvian basketball system are as follows:

1. Work with young players during the season (U-14, U-16, U-18, U-20 national teams players)

2. Organisation of qualitative summer camps.

3. Organisation of seminars for young players? coaches.

4. Organisation of seminars for professional basketball team coaches.

5. Formation of qualitative educational library and video archive for the needs of coaches.

6. Constant organisation of Latvian basketball expert meetings with other leading European experts.

7. Monitoring all of the national team players in foreign countries all season long.

8. Advise national teams on how to structure the preparation process to participate in tournaments organised by FIBA and FIBA Europe.
Respect and thanks for everything:

Alvertis, Bodiroga, Jasikevicius, Radja, Wilkins, Vrankovic, Fotsis, Rebraca, Kattash, Gentile, Koch, Middleton, Kutluay, Rogers, Papadopoulos, Becirovic, Tomasevic, Siskauskas, Pekovic, Lakovic, Vujanic, Chatzivrettas, Maljkovic, Spanoulis and many more to follow in the near future.

This appointment won't improve the level of players <img src='<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> but it is certainly a good move for Latvia. The level of basketball there is getting higher and I think BBL (Baltic Basketball League) helped with that. The budgets of Latvian clubs are growing. We'll play them in a friendly game and I expect a big win <img src='<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
