Dusan Ivkovic has decided to step down as head coach of the Serbian national team after guiding the team to a seventh place finish and a spot in next year’s FIBA World Cup.
At a press conference in the capital Belgrade, Ivkovic said that it was time for someone younger to take charge and guide them to next year’s event in Spain.
”I fulfilled my end of the bargain, which is to lead the national team in Slovenia,” Ivkovic said.
“Of course, I will be here, as always, but now it’s time for someone younger to accept the job. We have many young and talented coaches and if I am asked, I will have proposals.”
Ivkovic led Serbia to an unexpected silver medal at Eurobasket 2009 in Poland and then went on to lead them to a semi-final finish at the world championships in Turkey a year later.
The 69-year-old has been in charge of the national team for five years.
