Broken foot rules out Croatian star

Croatia’s Roko-Leni Ukic has been ruled out of next month’s Eurobasket with a broken foot.

Ukic broke a metatarsal bone in his foot during practice on Friday. After examination, the Fenerbahce guard learned that he would be out until mid-September at the earliest.

“I am heartsick and terribly disappointed,” Ukic admitted. “I do not know what else to say. I was so looking forward to playing at the Eurobasket where I really wanted to help Croatia.”

Ukic has been one of the leaders of the national team over the last two years, averaging 13.6 points at the last Eurobasket in Poland and 8.8 points last year in the World Championships in Turkey.

No announcement has been made regarding Ukic’s replacement.
