Everything looked like Matt Nielsen would follow his coach Neven Spahija and join him at Fenerbahce. According to Greek website gazzetta.gr however the 32-year old Australian is very close to a deal with Olympiacos in order to replace the departing Linas Kleiza.
Matt Nielsen was one of the cornerstones in Valencia’s successful effort to win the Eurocup last season, averaging 10.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists, also gaining Eurocup Finals MVP honours. He is reported to be the favorable player by Head Coach Dusan Ivkovic for the power forward position. Nielsen’s first European stint was in Greece, in the jersey of PAOK Thessaloniki, back in 2004. In 2005 he moved to Lithuania and Lietuvos Rytas for three seasons.
