Lithuania coach Jonas Kazlauskas was bitterly upset at his side’s humiliating 109-59 loss to Spain at the Rio Olympics, liking it to men against schoolboys.
It was Lithuania’s first loss of the Olympics, and their passage has already been secured with a game to spare but the 50-point loss will perhaps stick in the memories of basketball fans more than their three wins combined.
“I am ashamed,” said Kazlauskas.
“We played like a team school team against experienced professionals. It was a shame for Lithuanian basketball. It was like a shower with cold water. We should not play again like this. The team does not need a whip but we’re all adults.”
The win improved Spain to 2-2, with their second straight win. Lithuania face Croatia in their final game of Group B where the winner is likely to finish top.
“It will be a difficult game, but we will give our best,” Kazlauskas commented.
