Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers said Friday that Giannis Antetokounmpo is nearing a return from a calf injury and made it clear the team has no intention of shutting him down for the remainder of the season.
“He’s going to play when he’s healthy,” Rivers said on Friday. “We just got to make sure he’s healthy. He’s getting close. He’s working out. He looks good. So I would say hopefully sooner than later.”
Rivers declined to offer a specific timeline for Antetokounmpo’s return. The two-time MVP suffered the calf strain on January 23 and initially estimated his recovery would take four to six weeks. Antetokounmpo took another step forward Friday by completing an on-court workout.
Milwaukee has struggled in his absence, posting a 6-14 record without Antetokounmpo in the lineup. The Bucks currently sit 12th in the Eastern Conference as they await their star’s return.
