Jordan Ott addresses Suns’ historic defeat to Thunder in NBA Cup

Phoenix Suns head coach Jordan Ott reflected on Wednesday’s 138-89 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center, marking the largest margin of defeat in franchise history. Ott attributed the collapse to late-game turnovers and defensive lapses, particularly in the second half.

“The message is simple: give them credit. It’s a really good team that played an incredible game,” Ott said, emphasizing that improvement remains the team’s focus despite the blowout.

Ott highlighted the learning opportunity from facing a dominant Thunder squad. “We know where to go and how we’ve got to get better… they’re the standard in the NBA,” he noted, citing the team’s style of play and consistent performance as benchmarks.

The coach also addressed Grayson Allen’s ejection, calling it a clear flagrant two. “There’s no explanation… we’ve got to have a better response for sure,” Ott said, reflecting on the incident in the third quarter that widened the deficit.

Collin Gillespie’s struggles were also discussed, with Ott noting that defensive pressure and situational execution limited his production. “Collin is one small piece… he’s had a great run this season and he’ll respond,” Ott said, framing the loss as a growth opportunity for the young guard.

Looking ahead, Ott emphasized rest and recovery during the upcoming break. “Everyone is playing with something… we’ll get back, take a look at this, grow from this, see who we play next, and compete again,” he explained, highlighting the team’s commitment to preparation despite the loss.

The Suns will next face the Golden State Warriors, while the Thunder advance to the NBA Cup semifinals to meet either the Los Angeles Lakers or San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. Phoenix aims to regroup and address weaknesses revealed in Wednesday’s historic defeat.
