After an early end to his 2024-25 season and an impressive showing in the NBA Preseason 2025, Victor Wembanyama is already drawing major praise.
According to Carmelo Anthony, the San Antonio Spurs phenom could be in the running for the league’s highest individual honor in the upcoming 2025-26 NBA Regular Season.
“I predict he’s the MVP this year,” said the 41-year-old former star during an appearance on 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony.
“I say that because he has an opportunity to lead every statistical category in the game. Every category that there is, he can lead in this season.”
Anthony went on to compare the kind of dominance Wembanyama could reach with that of towering legends like Arvydas Sabonis, Nikola Jokic, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, and LeBron James, outlining how the 7’4” French talent has the tools to impact the game on every level.
Wembanyama entered the NBA as the highly anticipated first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft after beginning his professional journey in France.
He quickly met expectations – earning NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 2023-24 and being selected to the 2025 NBA All-Star Game.
His momentum was interrupted when doctors diagnosed him with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, prompting the Spurs to shut him down in February.
Now fully cleared, Wembanyama used the offseason to combine intense on-court development with a full slate of media and off-the-floor commitments, setting the stage for what could be a breakout MVP-caliber year.
The Spurs will wrap up their 2025 preseason by hosting the Indiana Pacers at Frost Bank Center on Friday.
The real test begins next Wednesday when they open the regular season on the road against the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center.
