Bones Hyland made an immediate impression in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ preseason opener on Saturday, stepping into the spotlight with a team-high scoring performance against the Denver Nuggets.
As Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic detailed, “Bones Hyland led the Timberwolves in scoring as they opened the preseason Saturday with a win over Denver.”
In just 22 minutes of action, the guard posted 18 points, dished out three assists, and committed only a single turnover, continuing the momentum he has carried over from a strong training camp.
Despite his hot start, Hyland is not slotted at the top of the rotation. Krawczynski pointed out that he sits “third on the depth chart at point guard behind Mike Conley and Rob Dillingham.”
Minnesota has significant long-term plans for Dillingham, having traded up in the 2024 draft to grab him with the eighth overall pick.
As a rookie, Dillingham had a modest role, “appearing in 49 games and averaging 4.5 points and 2.0 assists in 10.5 minutes per night.”
Hyland, meanwhile, is looking to carve out stability after bouncing around last season. He rejoined the Timberwolves in September on a new deal after initially signing with the club in February on a two-way contract.

Speaking about their relationship, Hyland explained, “He kind of reminds me of myself. We’re both shifty. We’re both slim-framed. We both have heart. … He really is like a little brother to me.”
The performance against Denver may strengthen Hyland’s case for more regular minutes, especially if he continues to bring both scoring punch and veteran support for the young backcourt.
