In a recent interview, Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick emphasized that Luka Doncic should be the primary player controlling the offense moving forward.
“I think Luka needs to be the guy that controls the offense,” Redick stated, per Jovan Buha of The Athletic. He went on to explain how the Lakers would stagger minutes to maximize their star players’ impact. “Bron and AR, because we’re gonna stagger everybody, they’re gonna have their times to be on the ball. But all three of those guys are very intelligent basketball players, and we can create mismatches. We can get teams in the blender,” Redick said.
Doncic, who has recently joined the Lakers in a blockbuster trade, has averaged 19.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists in his career with the team over four games. His blend of size, skill, and vision has made him a standout, but Redick sees an even bigger role for him going forward.
LeBron James, one of the league’s most versatile and gifted playmakers, has been thriving this season with 24.7 points, 8.8 assists, and 7.7 rebounds in 51 games. Meanwhile, Austin Reaves, another key figure in the Lakers’ lineup, has been putting up 19.2 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in 50 games this season.
Redick believes the combination of these three players can create significant mismatches, particularly when Doncic is at the helm. The Lakers’ offense, with its wealth of intelligent players, is poised to be unpredictable, keeping defenses on their toes.
The Lakers (34-21) currently sit in fourth place in the Western Conference. The team is gearing up for an exciting matchup tomorrow as they face the Dallas Mavericks, where Luka Doncic will go up against his former team for the first time since the trade.
The game promises to be a memorable one, with Doncic’s commanding presence expected to be the focal point of the Lakers’ offense. As the Lakers continue to integrate their new lineup, all eyes will be on how Doncic’s playmaking ability and leadership can elevate the team to new heights.
