The Golden State Warriors are actively exploring trade options ahead of the February 7th NBA trade deadline, with notable interest in both Zach LaVine and Jimmy Butler.
While both players are on the Warriors’ radar, LaVine appears to be the more appealing target at the moment, with multiple Warriors players potentially involved depending on the cost.
LaVine, who is nearly six years younger than Butler, offers a more cost-effective option for Golden State.
At $6 million less this season, LaVine also fits more easily into the Warriors’ culture, with many within the organization viewing him as a safer, more sustainable acquisition.
His contract runs longer than Butler’s, and while LaVine has dealt with injury concerns in the past, he’s enjoying a strong bounce-back season in 2024-25.
Averaging 24.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 34.1 minutes per game across 42 contests, LaVine is once again an All-Star candidate, making him a desirable asset.
While LaVine seems like a more immediate fit, the Warriors are also considering Butler, especially after recent developments have lowered his trade price.
Just weeks ago, Golden State appeared to be out of the running for Butler entirely, with no push from the front office to pursue him.
However, the perceived drop in Butler’s value has piqued the interest of key stakeholders within the organization, making him a more intriguing option.
The Warriors’ front office is motivated to make improvements and is reportedly willing to include their 2025 first-round draft pick in any deals that would help elevate the team out of lottery contention.
However, there are concerns regarding the potential disruption to team chemistry.
Veterans like Andrew Wiggins, Gary Payton II, and Kevon Looney are all considered key parts of the current roster, and the Warriors are wary of trading them for fear of upsetting the team’s balance.
One player who is reportedly not available in any trade discussions, however, is Jonathan Kuminga.
Despite the interest in Butler and LaVine, Kuminga is seen as an untouchable asset for the Warriors, who view him as an integral part of their future.
As the trade deadline draws closer, the Warriors will likely continue weighing their options, with LaVine seeming to be the safer and more realistic target, though Butler’s lowered price could still influence their decision-making process.
