Magic Johnson has expressed excitement over the Los Angeles Lakers’ trade that sent D’Angelo Russell and Maxwell Lewis to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton.
Johnson, a Lakers legend, took to social media to share his thoughts on the move.
“Laker Nation, I am so excited about the trade for Dorian Finney-Smith. He’s an excellent defender and 3-point shooter – just what the Lakers needed! Really good move by Rob Pelinka. The Lakers also acquired Shake Milton!” Johnson tweeted.
The trade marks a significant shift for the Lakers, strengthening their roster with two key additions. Los Angeles added Finney-Smith, a versatile forward, and Milton, a guard known for his scoring and playmaking abilities.
Finney-Smith is having a career-best season, shooting 44% from three-point range. His defensive prowess and ability to guard multiple positions align with the Lakers’ need for a reliable two-way player to complement stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Milton, who is on a team-friendly contract with two non-guaranteed years, provides the Lakers with added depth in the backcourt. His playmaking ability and offensive consistency will be valuable off the bench.
The trade also brings financial relief to the Lakers. By moving Russell’s expiring $36 million contract, Los Angeles saves $15 million in salary and luxury tax penalties. The deal increases the Lakers’ flexibility under the NBA’s second-apron restrictions, raising their available margin to $3.5 million.
Russell, 28, struggled with consistency during his second stint with the Lakers, averaging 12.4 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.8 rebounds.
Lewis, the Lakers’ second-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, also heads to Brooklyn. The 21-year-old rookie has shown flashes of potential in limited action and could be part of the Nets’ future plans.
For the Lakers, this trade bolsters their chances to compete for a championship. Finney-Smith, who has averaged 10.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists this season, strengthens the Lakers’ depth. Milton adds scoring and playmaking off the bench.
