Suns AC John Lucas III compares Kevin Durant with LeBron James and Kobe Bryant

In a recent interview on the Scoop B Radio Podcast with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Phoenix Suns assistant coach John Lucas III delved into the comparisons between Suns star Kevin Durant and NBA legends LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

Lucas discussed the similarities in their approach to the game, highlighting their shared passion for basketball and dedication to studying the sport.

He emphasized their commitment to analyzing opponents’ tendencies and improving their own game, stating, “They’re wired similarly because they all love the game and they study the game.”

Regarding Durant’s leadership style, Lucas challenged the criticism often directed at the two-time NBA champion, asserting that Durant leads by example and lifts his teammates up in his own way. He defended Durant against claims that he lacks leadership qualities, stating, “He leads by example. He’s just not who people want him to be and that’s okay.”

Lucas pointed out the distinct leadership styles of James, Bryant, and Durant. He described James as a vocal leader who communicates effectively on the court, guiding his teammates through verbal instruction. In contrast, Bryant leads by setting an example through his actions, demonstrating the work ethic and intensity he expects from his team.

For Durant, Lucas highlighted a blend of both approaches, noting his quieter demeanor coupled with his ability to lead through on-court performance. He explained, “KD is the exact same but he is a little bit of both but more quiet but also he’ll be like, Lemme show you how to get a bucket real quick.”

Furthermore, Lucas emphasized the importance of understanding the behind-the-scenes dynamics of leadership within a team. He highlighted the unseen aspects of leadership that occur off the court, stating, “everyone else gets to see who’s on the court when the TV’s on…but they don’t get to see…where the REAL leadership roles come out.”

Ultimately, Lucas underscored that while each player has a unique leadership style, they all possess an undeniable competitiveness and determination, referred to as having a “DOG in ’em.” He highlighted their shared commitment to excellence and their impact on the game both on and off the court.
