Bill Walton’s life story, extending beyond his basketball career, is marked by various fascinating aspects, and it may even involve inspiring one of cinema’s most iconic characters.
While broadcasting Oregon’s decisive victory over USC alongside Dave Pasch, Pasch directly inquired about a rumor he had heard from Walton.
“Is it true that you were in the mix to play Chewbacca?” Pasch asked. “I’m being serious, I heard that you were being considered to play that role.”
Walton initially evaded the question, instead mentioning a gathering with Star Wars creator George Lucas, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Bill Russell. However, prompted by Pasch, Walton eventually provided a direct answer to the question.
“I auditioned for Chewbacca and they said, ’No, but we’re going to model the character after you,’” Walton said.
