Gregg Popovich: Aggressiveness is where Victor Wembanyama has made the most progress

Here’s San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich applauding rookie Victor Wembanyama’s understanding of the game earlier this week.

(via San Antonio Spurs):

Reporter: “When you look at the totality of the first half of Victor’s season, where do you think he’s made the most progress?”

Popovich: “Probably aggressiveness, running to the bucket and not being so concentrated on three-point shots, running the floor, being that target. And of course our team has learned that they need to throw those passes, it’s not something we were used to, but he’s really learned how to do that and understand that that sets a tone for everybody. Defensively, he’s becoming a really good rim protector. And obviously he’s tall and long and he should be, but he’s figuring out how to make that a definite priority, and everybody else is learning how to handle that by playing around him.”

Reporter: “Is that fair to say that Victor’s receptive to that kind of coaching?”

Popovich: “He’s receptive to any kind of coaching. He has a really high IQ. He understands the game intuitively. You explain something to him, and he understands it. He’s just a remarkable 20-year-old.”
